My (humble) 8-point reaction to Shah Rukh Khan’s detention

Priya Ramani – Saturday, August 22, 2009 5:50 PM

Now that we’ve stopped breathing fire and yelling everyone who opposes our point of view on actor Shah Rukh Khan’s detention in Newark, here’s my take on the matter.

1. Vivek Oberoi may need publicity. SRK certainly doesn’t. He’s big in India. And he’s certainly big overseas. If you look at the last few decades of Bollywood’s overseas box office figures, thanks to Karan Johar and the Yash Raj slew of films, SRK is our biggest star ever in the US.

2. SRK rarely wears his Muslim identity on his sleeve. He has repeatedly said he stands for young, educated India, more than for any single community. SRK is the poster boy of Consumer India, not Muslim India. That is why, even at Newark, SRK never used the word Muslim. I think he intentionally avoided it. All of Bollywood’s three Khans are educated, liberal Muslims. They don’t want to be in a situation where they are made the poster boys of right wing groups who believe the US hates all Muslims.

Wow, i’ve just read some of the comments in response to Priya’s blog. Very mixed views on the incident. I simply think the entire situation has been blown out of proportion by the Indian media. Yes, SRK is a global icon, whether people like it or not. His treatment at the Newark Airport has been more than justified by the American authorities and SRK alike. People are just as bad as the media and want to talk about it, blog about it, tweet about it etc and those who say they don’t really care seem to have written a whole essay about the incident. SRK was only expressing his point of view, if he felt humiliated why should it bother the Americans so much? If you don’t care whether he visits your country or not surely his feelings should count for nothing right? That’s a great way to treat a visitor in your country! I think the Americans need to educate themselves a little more about the world and where people actually come from! I visited the US in 2006 and had a short haul in Chicago. I was taking my order at Jack In the Box and the lady at the till asked me where I was from, and I replied London, UK, and she said… ‘where’s that’? I was gobsmacked! Well that’s Americans for you, many of them don’t even have passports so what are they going to know about the world? I’m surprised if they even know that the world is actually round!

SRK is innocent. 100% fare on this article. people just doing politics on this matter. Salman Khan and many bustards like them comment badly to SRK who is better than him. One thing you you know..any thing about SRK is a big NEWS. so it is very shortest path to come to the NEWS,say some thing about SRK,u will be on the TV.so many people(Salman,AAmir..etc) are trying to do that only.they can’t do good thing.so they r doing such type cheap things for publicity . But SRK is doing very good work.thats why is so popular.Best of Luck SRK.Keep it up.. Don’t bother about bad people. just do ur work for good ,and educated people. The world is behind u..Best of luck.
