SRK is Surinder in RNBDJ

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan sheds his Casanova image for a new film, basing his character on a middle-aged man he met while hosting a popular game show on Indian television.

Khan, who turned 43 on Sunday, has mostly played the young romantic lead in a career spanning nearly two decades and 60 films.

But for filmmaker Aditya Chopra’s “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi,” Khan casts off his designer suits and jeans to play a bespectacled government employee in ill-fitting trousers.

“I want to play the exact opposite of Raj and Rahul, the romantic hero that I have played all these days,” Khan said at a press conference on Sunday.

“I want to show that it is special to be ordinary, which is why I am doing this film.”

Khan, Bollywood’s most bankable star, said the character was inspired by a “sweet, unassuming” contestant he met last year on the sets of “Kaun Banega Crorepati”, the Indian version of the worldwide hit TV show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”.

“I want everyone who watches the film to realise that the person they love is the best romantic hero there could be,” he said.

Not much is known about the storyline of “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” except that the film is a love story and it also features Khan in a younger role — again inspired by a contestant in another TV show hosted by the actor.

Khan did not elaborate but said this second character was based on another contestant he met this year on “Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?,” the Indian version of another American game show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”.

“Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” opens in cinemas on December 12.

As we had informed, so it happened. The much awaited song promo of Aditya Chopra’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer, RAB NE BANA DI JODI, made a high profile appearance on Sunday, across all leading channels, to coincide with the superstar’s birthday. And what a song and what a promo!

The teaser kickstarts with SRK in his common man look taking a bath under a tap, followed by his self cooked bread and butter breakfast, and not to mention that he even washes the plates! All the while, the superb harmonium rhythm accompanies the proceedings and finally the superlative number, ‘Haule Haule’ unfolds. The Sukhwinder–SRK magic is palpable once again. This is one number that we promise; even Shah Rukh Khan’s adversaries will fall in love with! The simple melody is absolutely bewitching and the song takes the listeners in its grips, ‘haule haule’ (slowly). Yes, that’s the beauty of the number. Initially, it does strike as just another sweet love song but slowly and surely it captures the heart! Jaideep Sahni as the lyricist strikes an instant cord with his simple but meaningful lyrics– “Haule haule se hawa lagti hai, Haule haule se dawa lagti hai, Haule haule se dua lagti hai, Haule haule chanda badhta hai, Haule haule ghoonghat uthta hai, Haule haule se nasha chadhta hai!”

The debutant Anushka Sharma looking pretty in her usual simple ’salwar–suit’, makes a brief appearance on a rickshaw. And she is there as the mesmerizing song ends which shows her applying colour (‘gulal’) to the bespectacled and moustached Shah Rukh Khan.

As the saying goes, well begun is half done! The RNBDJ song promo has received unanimous praise from all sections of the trade as well as the general paying public. So, with such a beautiful number first up we await even more eagerly for the launch of its much anticipated music album on 6th/7th November.

It was SRK mania at its best. The City’s traffic almost came to a halt yesterday. The reason – SRK’s 43rd birthday. But adding to the festivity was a well marketed tie up with his new film ‘Rab Ne Banadi Jodi’. He calls it a gift form yashraj and old friend Aaditya Chopra. Shahrukh seems to have gone the extra mile to play the ordinary Surinder Sahini in the film.

He said, “It is a kind of love story but not the young ones which I have done like in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.”

And if these words of wisodm were not enough for King Khan to promote his new film, the next ace is newcomer Anushka Sharma. SRK said, ” Youngsters me as an actor but are not in awe of me so that reflects in their performance and in turn helps me to better my work.”

Shahrukh’s films may just not be about money anymore as they all seem to have a message. He himself hopes that at the end of the movie a small message is passed on to the audience. He said his film ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ was the story of a common man and families would love it.
