Fan mail from Helsinki, Finland…
Its pitch black at 6 pm in the evening, and I am at my first official dinner party on my first visit to Finland. Being the newest and youngest of the group, naturally I want to impress, sound erudite. I will settle for not spilling the food or saying something stupid.
One of my much, much senior colleagues senses my discomfort and turns to me. “So… you are from India, eh?” followed by a brilliant smile.
I smile back, my head furiously nodding yes.
And we launch into a conversation about India. The man is, not so surprisingly, knowledgeable. He knows about the Indian languages, have read our epics and understood them, know about our strengths and weaknesses. “My family…” he says, “they all love Indian movies. We have to move around a lot, you know… each time we go somewhere, we take our movies and watch them all over. My wife, my kids, they all love it.”
Wow. Thought I. Finally, here is a guy who loves Indian cinema! Is it Ray or Karnad he is talking about? May be Mani Ratnam? Or ‘Sholay’ perhaps, or Raj Kapoor movies.
“Which is your favourite one?”
“Kabi Kusheee Kabi Gaaam” he smiles at me. “And the guy in there… we love all his movies.”
I am shocked. A movie so panned by the critics for its over-the-top everything, and my colleague loves it. “Erm.. which actor?” I move in cautiously.
“The cute and funny guy! My wife… and my daughters.. they all love him… he is so sexy, they say.”
Ah. Hrithik Roshan. Granted, I was one of the few people who saw the ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ trailer and thought the movie will bomb, but I have seen enough of junior Roshan in ‘Dhoom 2’ to revise that opinion.
“No… not him! The guy… RSK?” he corrects me.
“Shah Rukh!?”
“Yes… him.”
Suddenly, Finland is not a strange country anymore. Shah Rukh has been my secret love and secret shame from the time I turned ten. All around me, there were people who thought Salman had a better body, and Amir was a better actor. When I was 20, all the rumors about his sexuality began to surface. I felt like a Christian in ancient Rome, forced to take my devotion underground. But at that moment in the dinner, I felt liberated and knew that I will feel right at home in Finland.
When I moved to Finland for my job, I took a few movies – ‘DON’, ‘DDLJ’, ‘KHNH’ among others – for my colleagues. They saw all the movies, swapping them with each other. They wanted to know more about SRK. Lunch time conversations would almost always revolve around him, on how he wooed his wife Gauri for seven years, and how ‘DDLJ’ is a movie partially based on his own love story. It did not matter to them that he never kissed his heroines on screen or took his shirt off (this was before the ‘OSO’ days). The man looked at them with champagne eyes and puppy dog looks, and the women swooned like Gopikas on a Rasaleela night. However, I was not prepared for the men. It’s all very well to see women go ga-ga over SRK’s mustache in ‘Paheli’ and his beard in ‘Chak De..’, but it’s entirely different when a handsome gay man sighs over his extended arms in ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’.
Grown men cried with him in ‘Kabhi Al Vida Na Kehna’ and ‘Mohabbatein’.

I dont understand why the media is deliberately tryin to take away the KING’s title from our dearest SRK when he proves dat he deserves it again n again???
